Asthma and allergies in rise: which is the role of the climate?
Asthma is an increasingly frequent disease and the allergic demonstrations are increasingly severe. How to explain this phenomenon? Which is the share of the climate change? Can the GMO, them also, to play a part?
Asthma in France: 3,5 million people
In France, 3,5 million people is asthmatic. An allergic component is found in 70 to 80% of the cases and at 95% of the children. Asthma is already a disease difficult to deal with, the things become complicated more especially as asthma is associated with an allergy. It is in particular essential to identify the allergens causes in order to them évincer of it. However these people can present an over-sensitiveness to various aéro-allergens: acarina, hairs of animals, moulds, pollens…
In parallel, one realizes that asthma is an increasingly frequent pathology. In addition, the people who suffer from allergies to pollens have increasingly severe demonstrations and over increasingly long periods. Why? Which are the determinants of this phenomenon?
Asthma and the allergy: reflections of the climatic variations?
The change of climate is in question. Its impact on asthma and the allergies is done on two levels:
The weather conditions act on the development of the allergens
The brutal variations of temperature, in particular coolings, accompanied by wind can start a contraction of the bronchi.
Moreover, the climate change and the warming of great width to which one has assisted for several years (greenhouse effect) are related to pollution. However the pollutants are likely to support sensitizing with the respiratory allergens. As for ozone, it involves an ignition of the bronchi and worsens the bronchial hyperactivity. In addition, the various pollutants can act as synergy, while preparing or by reinforcing the action of other starting factors of asthma.
Under the effects of climate warming and certain pollutants able to act on the growth of the plants, pollens are more and more varied and appear more and more precociously, in particular at the end of the winter and at the beginning of spring. With final, the quantity of pollens strongly increased because the season of pollens did not only shift in time but also extended in duration…
Can the GMO them also explain the progression of asthma?
The GMO present proteins more resistant to the weedkillers and/or for the insects, still should it be checked that these proteins do not represent an allergic risk. For the moment, it is not the case whereas billion people has consumed transgenic plants for ten years. Before the GMO are not marketed, they must satisfy a strategy of evaluation and scientific control developped at the point by WHO. Then, they are the subject of a monitoring organized by the network Allergo-Vigilance. So so far no risk was detected, it is appropriate to continue the monitoring of pollens of these genetically modified plants, from the point of view of the respiratory allergies and their dissemination.
