habituation
Progressive reduction in the effect of a drug in spite of the increase in the amounts taken. This phenomenon can result in increasing the amounts to maintain an effectiveness constant of the treatment. Habituation should not be confused with the dependence, defined as a physical and/or psychic need to take a drug.
