Hysteria

Hysterical personality

It prevails at the woman and is made up various character traits:

> A theatralism with a tempting behavior (erotisation of the social reports/ratios).

> An emotional dependence and a great intolerance with frustration (the hysterical is capricious and irritable).

> A plasticity: the hysterical adapts his attitude according to the desires of the other.

> A mythomania. The hysterical prefers food of the stories rather than his history.

> An emotional hyperreactivity: the feelings are exaggerated in their expression and are lived with intensity (crises of tear and spectacular angers)

> Sexual disorders: dislike or fear of sexuality, platonic friendships, or hypersexuality connects (Donjuanism at the man) but in fact frigidity.

Physical and psychic symptoms of hysteria

The hysterical expresses his anguishes and his sufferings on his body in a theatrical way (symptoms “conversifs”). One can observe attacks of nerves which resemble epileptic fits, faintnesses repeated or of the pains at the time of the sexual relations. There is no physical cause with these symptoms, which have in fact an unconscious origin, as in any neurosis. These symptoms do not worry the hysterical (“beautiful indifference”) and often bring secondary benefit (entourage, company).

The symptoms can be also of nature psychic (selective amnesia, states second, multiple personality or somnanbulism).

Evolution of hysteria

It is as difficult for the doctor as for the close relations of finding the happy medium between the rejection and a too great kindness. These patients thus have often deteriorations in their socio-professional, family and emotional operation. The depressions and suicide attempts are very frequent.

Treatment

The medicamentous treatments (antidepressants, anxiolytic) must be used with prudence because the hysterical is likely to find there a benefit because of his attraction for the medical world. The body approaches are interesting but attention with the erotisation of the relationship with the relaxator. Analytical psychotherapies are traditionally indicated in the event of hysteria. Lastly, there is a recent renewed interest for hypnosis.

To retain

The hysterical expresses his sufferings through physical and psychic symptoms often very spectacular. The causes are not organic but unconscious. The hystericals refer quite particular of personality with in particular a theatralism and a tempting behavior. This neurosis often becomes complicated suicide attempts.
