Menopause: what occurs for my skin?
The menopause is not a disease, it is a normal evolution, a stage to be passed in the life of any woman. It should however be recognized that the changes which she involves are not always more pleasant. The skin, in particular, is touched by the hormonal modifications.
The normal ageing of the skin
Menopause or not, our skin ages. With the wire of time, and more still if our skin were attacked by the free sun or radicals, it loses its flexibility, of its firmness, as the elastic fibers which underlie it see their quality and their quantity to decrease. Until there, we are in a normal ageing, i.e. which is common to the men and the women.
Menopause: to take age and to lose hormones
For the women, this evolution accelerates with the menopause, because the estrogens secreted during the life by the ovaries play a protective part for the skin. Once the menopause put them at rest, this protection disappears. And in addition to normal ageing, the women are confronted with the reduction in grease in the skin (gold this “stuffing” is an obstacle with the wrinkles) and on the skin (but the sebum, even if it is related to the appearance of buttons, also plays a protective part of the skin).
Consequences which go beyond the wrinkles
The consequences of the menopause for the skin are not only one acceleration of visible ageing. Because it is less flexible, the skin can start to itch. Because of the hormonal modifications and greater brittleness, the risk to develop rosacée or blotches increases too; and because the protective sebum is less present, the lesions are infected more easily.
What to make when the menopause arrives?
You can of course inform you about the hormonal treatment of substitution, which replaces the hormones manufactured by your ovaries by synthetic hormones that you absorb under medical control. But do not forget, initially, to adapt your beauty care. Too many women think of being able to keep all their life the products which suited them when they were thirty years old! The marks propose today very rich creams, which are appropriate perfectly for the ménopausées fragile skins.
