Sporting wounds/Athlete, cured yourself
It is essential to obtain medical care if you were wounded by making sport and if the traumatism is accompanied by a strong pain and puffiness, of numbness, or if you are not able to move a member or an articulation. But for a wrench or a light distorsion, bumps or bruises (“blue”), you can treat yourself as follows:
Rest: one or two days without exercises will make it possible the affected zone to be cured. Your body has need of time to recover. As from the moment when you can achieve your daily routine without pain, take again all your activities gently.
Freeze: apply during 15-20 minutes a bag of ice (or even a bag of garden peas frozen wrapped in a towel) over the painful part, several times in the course of the day. The cold helps to minimize puffiness and the ignition by slowing down the blood flood towards the injured place, and it engourdit somewhat the pain.
Compression: between two applications of ice, roll up an elastic binding around the painful place to reduce puffiness by compression. Binding must be rather tight, but it should be made sure that it does not compress a nerve or that he does not cut circulation. If the extremity of the member becomes blue, it is too tight! for the same reasons, do not keep binding during the night.
Rise: put gravity at your service – try to keep the member wounded in high position in order to prevent the fluids from accumulating in ignited fabrics. If it is the leg which is wounded, it must be higher than the hip, in position lying. If it is an arm, it should be put in scarf.
You can also decrease the ignition and relieve the pain with AAS (acetylsalicylic acid), ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatory drugs. Consult initially your doctor or your pharmacist before taking drugs, and take guard not to exceed the amount recommended. When you do all that, if you do not feel better at the end of 48 hours, it is preferable to see a doctor.
