Today, the majority of the babies are nourished with the feeding-bottle. Certain women find more practical this method. Others do not want quite simply to nurse. However, breast feeding has made a shy person return for a few years.
The current place of breast feeding maternelAujourd’ today, the breast-feeding in Europe, constitutes a kind of exploit in particular if one refers in the usual environmental conditions, socio-economic and family. During centuries, the breast-feeding was the only means of nourishing the children even if sometimes mothers chose to engage the services of a nurse. Suddenly, in the space of a generation, one passed from the centre to the feeding-bottle and for one half-century, the frequency and the duration of the breast-feeding have decreased quickly. The reasons are multiple. The increasing safety given by modern milks, commercial propaganda on industrial milks, connects it facilitated offered by these products, the unhappy term of “maternized” given a time by the law to infantile milks, the concept badly included/understood of Women’s Liberation count among the most important causes. One must add to that a certain ignorance of the problems of breast feeding on behalf of the doctors by deficiency of teaching in faculties.
Return in strength of breast feeding
For a few years, one has attended a return in strength of the breast-feeding to the United States and in the Scandinavian countries, whose movement is felt in France. In 1992, the average for 80% of the births was of 45,2% of breast feeding at the exit of maternity. It is in the West of the hexagon that one finds the figures low, against 60% in Paris. 30% of the young mothers continue to nurse after 1 month and only 5 to 10% persist after 2 months. In Norway or Sweden, 98% of the mothers nurse at the exit of maternity.
Miss councils and encouragements
The majority of the young mothers wish to nurse but certain resistances are difficult to overcome and the failures are very frequent. The ignorance of much of young women is obvious. The lack of councils and encouragements during the pregnancy is usual. Moreover, in the majority of maternities, force is to note a lack of obvious enthusiasm on behalf of the health workforce. _ under the pretext badly include that it should not obtain of force the assent of mother, one omit to inform it and to speak openly with it. He is true, for their discharge, that when the midwives and the auxiliaries in too small number are overflowed, the bottle-feeding adapts better to the routine of the biberonnery that the teaching of breast feeding to the centre, which requires patience and availability.
Too much anxiety?
The failure of breast feeding to the centre is especially due to the lack of conviction, the anxiety and the many occupations of the modern women, all things which interfere with the psycho-somatic element of the evacuation and the reflex of ejection of milk. One leads then to the vicious circle of an insufficient milk rise, of a furious infant who is hungry and of a traumatized and distressed mother who does not have enough milk. One can consider it regrettable that too the short duration of the postnatal rest, the absence of cribs and parts of rest at works, the bad social recognition are important brakes with the development of the breast-feeding in France. An educational preparation led well as of the school (course of natural science, sex education, etc), a catch of load during the pregnancy (course psychoprophylactic…), the presence of a medical team and ancillary medical motivated in maternities could avoid many failures.
In the United States, in 1956 Licks it League was created whose the stimulating voluntary ones make the promotion of the breast-feeding. This League of the Breast-feeding which is composed nowadays of 18.000 instructresses divided in 4.000 groups and 45 countries is represented in France where exists also another more recent association of which the goal is to help the young mothers wishing to nurse: Solidarilait.
